As long as CDs exist, CD players will also be needed to play them. Like this new D-03X from Luxman for example.
The new Luxman D-03X is on the one hand a ‘traditional’ CD player, but can also handle MQA CDs and MQA files. For the latter possibility a USB input is provided, which makes the D-03X also a file player / DAC. Furthermore, playback software for Windows and macOS is available. But for fans of the time-honoured CD, this is all just a bycatch. After all, it’s all about the old silver discs! As far as that’s concerned, this Luxman delivers! The device has a CD drive with a steel top plate and 8mm thick alumunium base, which should lead to a very stable whole.
For the D/A-converter Luxman has chosen a PCM1795 from Texas Instruments. This can easily handle hi-res audio. Via USB it converts PCM up to 384 kHz / 32 bit, DSD up to 11.28 MHz and MQA 48 kHz / 24 bit (MQA render mode up to 96 kHz / 24 bit). There is also a digital input – coaxial and optical – available, which can handle up to 192 kHz / 24 bit. As far as outputs are concerned, you can choose between unbalanced cinch or balanced XLR. The price for this versatile CD player is £3500 British Pounds.
