This Friday, September 3, Stan Vreeken will release his latest single “Cinderella Goes It Alone. A month later his long awaited debut album will follow.
Cinderella Goes It Alone’ is a catchy synth-pop song with which Vreeken gives an emancipatory, and above all very danceable, twist to a classic fairy tale: Because who ever said that a prince was needed to drive the carriage, bring the glass slipper and escort Cinderella to the ball?
Stan: “What started out as a song for my sister, whom I wanted to wish a simple night out like that without being harassed all the time, suddenly became a kind of protest song against the male gaze and against the straitjacket in which women (unfortunately) still seem to be…. but then in my way: an unadorned protest song for the dance floor!”
Formatting to debut album
With this song, Stan, equipped with a rock-solid melody, a pumping bass and sparkling synthesizers, announces the release of his debut album. That album will be released on Friday, October 1 and will be called “Just Like That”.
Just Like That
Just Like That is the first full-length album released by Stan under his own name, in collaboration with online distributor Lab Music. The album, on which Stan showcases his songwriting skills in ten songs, sounds – as we read in the announcement – ‘like a bucket full of crayons that has been carefully knocked over. Stan produced everything himself, and in doing so he was inspired – with great childlike enthusiasm – by the song-smiths, synth-pop and blue-eyed soul of the 70s and 80s. There is also plenty of room for the subtle imagination and surprising imagery that characterize him, and with which he has made a name for himself in recent years in both the pop and the theater world’.
Selection of musicians
Just Like That’ also features a selection of great musicians like Maarten Hogenhuis on saxophone, Jasper Slijderink (Jett Rebel, Duncan Laurence) on keys and Jelle Huiberts (Kovacs, Jeangu Macrooy) on drums. An earlier single from the album, ‘Like That’, has already been included in various playlists such as New Music Friday NL, Good Vibes Only and Indie Pop Rocks.
About Stan Vreeken
Stan Vreeken is – as we read in the press release that accompanies the release: ‘an artistic centipede. A creative at heart – who after his studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam wrote behind the scenes for many other (pop) artists (including Ruben Hein, Do, Guusje, Tania Kross, Friday). In addition, in recent years he has made a name for himself in the theater as a composer, performer, singer and lyricist. He performed his own music theater shows at major festivals such as Operadagen Rotterdam, de Parade and Oerol, and worked with people like Pepijn Gunneweg (The Ashton Brothers), Gijs Naber and Erik Whien. This album is an important next step in his solo career’. More information can be found on his website.
Live: release concert on September 3
On September 3, the day ‘Cinderella Goes It Alone’ will be released, Stan will play two concerts at On The Roof in Amsterdam-Noord in the formation with which he will promote his album next year.
