Reportedly, Google is working on an open and thus unlicensed (=free) alternative to both Dolby Vision and Atmos.
According to this post at What-HiFi, Google is working on free alternatives to Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Given Google’s solid market position in matter of smartphones and smart TVs, this could be the well-known ‘game changer’. According to rumors, Google reported the plans to manufacturers earlier this year, but has apparently managed to keep it under the hood until now. The working name of the assumed system seems to be known internally under the name ‘Project Caviar’. Incidentally, Google is not the first to try to train Dolby’s ‘monopoly’ on HDR images. Samsung previously did so by licensing HDR10+ for free, but for now still with relatively moderate success. Perhaps Google will succeed?
