Well, if you are connected… you’re done! Now you can just start ROON and play. You are now virtually included in your network where ROON is running. ROON sees no difference between your remote location and your home network where the server is running.

We were able to listen to music via a mobile hotspot and camping-wifi without any problems. It really works 100% stable. Please note that a fairly fast connection is required. At least 2 Mbit continuous we have noticed. Otherwise ROON does not run very well. Certainly not with high-res.

We also want to mention that you really need to take mobile data into account. Of course, you will get through your data very fast this way. (CD quality with flac is about 700 Kbps, so a track of 5 minutes is 37.5 MB. High Res is at least double the data. Often even three or four times). We therefore simply do not recommend it unless you have unlimited data.

And plainly using a mobile network?

We haven’t got ROON working over a ‘clean’ mobile network connection without wifi yet. However, we think it should be possible. After all: you are connected to the home network (the ip-address is ‘local’) there must be apps or tricks available to ‘fake’ a wifi connection – we already tried Xposed: didn’t work (in 2018) – so ROON thinks it’s on wifi, but in the meantime it’s connected via a VPN tunnel. After all: if we are connected to the hotspot of the mobile phone with our laptop, we can directly connect to ROON. So ROON really only looks at wifi. And not to the network environment.

So what we are going to try is to create a software-based bridge between the mobile data (4G) and the WiFi adapter. If anyone has any ideas: we’d love to hear about it!

Possibilities

Now that you have set up a VPN, there are many more possibilities than playing with ROON. You are now virtually at home. So you can do countless other things. Think about it:

  • Router options change via your local router IP address (be careful, if the connection is lost, you will lose your VPN connection immediately)
  • Launch apps that are location specific. Think of the NPO app. Or some apps for watching TV (formerly the Ziggo / UPC app)
  • Using Dutch Google (Google often goes automatically to the country where you are, because of network info)
  • Secure internet via Camping Wi-Fi; VPN encrypts data. Possible peepers can now no longer watch… 🙂
  • Etc…
  • Etc…
  • Etc…

We hope you had something to gain from this workshop! Have fun listening, watching…!
