The Martin Garrix & JBL Music Academy (powered by STMPD RCRDS & Studios) has been launched, a 3-day program created by JBL and Martin Garrix to give up-and-coming talent a stage and support them in their path to success.

Opportunity for young people

‘To take your musical career to the next level, it takes more than scoring a hit. JBL and Martin Garrix believe it is important that young talent is given a chance and are happy to share their knowledge of the music industry to help them pursue their dreams.

That’s why JBL and STMPD RCRDS present the Martin Garrix & JBL Music Academy: a unique opportunity for 40 talented musicians, songwriters, singers and producers from around the world to learn from music industry experts to kickstart their musical careers. Emerging music talents will also hear more about the business facets, such as managing bookings, distribution and legal matters’, reads the announcement.

New wave of talent

“I’m super excited to take this next step together with JBL. With my label STMPD RCRDS our focus is already on emerging talent, but thanks to this collaboration with JBL we can offer the same stage to a new wave of talents from around the world.” says Martin Garrix.

Talks and training sessions

Participants will receive talks and training from inspiring speakers from the music industry – including Martin Garrix himself – in order to bring out the best in themselves. This will take place in Amsterdam’s largest recording studio, STMPD Studios, where, in addition to Martin Garrix, Pharrell Williams, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, The Black Eyed Peas, The Script and David Guetta, among others, have recorded.

“Martin Garrix has been a JBL ambassador for over a year and a half and this program is really another step in our partnership,” said Robert-Jan van Dormael, Vice President Integrated Marketing EMEA HARMAN. “For us it is important to give talent a voice and this is also where Martin Garrix and STMPD RCRDS invest a lot of time. I think it would be great if a future JBL ambassador comes out of this.”

OLED becomes OLED EX, for everyone Thu, 01 Dec 2022 16:30:06 +0000 If you buy an OLED TV now, chances are that it incorporates an OLED EX panel, with 30% higher brightness.

LG manufactures OLED panels for a wide range of television brands, including, for example, Sony, Panasonic and, of course, its own TVs. The factory recently switched completely and permanently to producing OLED EX panels. Which means that every TV now released on the market (and equipped with an LG panel) comes with the EX version. That means a 30% increase in brightness over regular OLED panels. Under the hood, deuterium (popularly known as heavy hydrogen) is employed, among other things, as well as “personalized algorithms” that, according to the manufacturer, improve stability and efficiency of the OLED. And that, in turn, should lead to better picture quality down the line.

Dual CS 329 fully automatic turntable Thu, 01 Dec 2022 14:00:04 +0000 The new Dual CS 329 is a fully automatic turntable that also has an on-board phono preamplifier. This makes it easy to integrate into any setup.

We see more and more turntables intended for entry-level users. And those from the “renowned” brands. These are not players from the ‘as low as you can go’ price category, but starting from about 300…400 Euro. If you want to get acquainted with vinyl, or bring back your old record collection for nostalgic reasons, then you’re in the right place. Take for example the new Dual CS 329, a full automatic with integrated phono preamplifier. Complete plug&play, everything is pre-installed. The belt driven CS 329 starts at the push of a button, the arm moves automatically to the slot and sets the needle on the record there. Stopping is also a matter of pressing the appropriate button; the arm then moves back to the rest position. For the enthusiast, manual placement of the needle is also an option.

The built-in phono preamplifier can be switched off if desired, so that you can use your own preamplifier. The Audio Technica AT 91 cartridge makes it complete. The Dual CS 329 costs €399.

Nagra presents Model I headphones Wed, 30 Nov 2022 16:30:58 +0000 The new Nagra Model I headphones were developed in collaboration with Audeze, with a user scenario in portable recording.

According to the manufacturer, the Nagra Model I headphones are designed to reproduce a particularly wide frequency band, while the timbre is also very precise. The focus in terms of purpose of the Model I is on mobile recording. Hence the choice of a closed type, which provides isolation from the outside world and its disturbing sounds. Nagra has also taken into account that portable sound recorders that run on batteries do not have a “full” headphone amplifier on board. This is due to power consumption. Nagra joined forces with the well-known headphone manufacturer Audeze, so that the expertise of both manufacturers merge in this model. Price and further specifications are lacking at the time of writing.

Silent Angel Bonn NX switch Tue, 29 Nov 2022 14:00:25 +0000 The new Silent Angel Bonn NX network switch is designed to “separate” regular network traffic from audio network traffic.

Audiophiles who go to extremes also tackle network components in their home. For that purpose, for example, the brand new Silent Angel Bonn NX Gigabit switch can come in handy. The idea, according to the manufacturer, is that noise is avoided, data packets are transmitted very precisely timed and a reduction of interference with bandwidth-intensive data traffic such as coming from, say, PCs in the home. The switch built in a two-layer enclosure features gold-plated Ethernet ports. A TCXO clock signal of 25 Mhz has also been implemented, while an external clock input is available too. The Silent Angel Bonn NX isn’t exactly cheap, so see it as the final touch to a top notch high-end setting: $3499.

TRPTK CD-releases Kersten McCall ‘B.ACH’ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 14:00:36 +0000 Flutist Kersten McCall puts his own spin on – indeed – Bach on the CD “B.ACH,” released Saturday by TRPTK.

German-born Kersten McCall grew up as the son of composer Brent McCall in Donaueschingen, where the annual MusikTage takes place. In this musical milieu, he started playing the flute at age nine. He studied with Felix Renggli at the Schaffhausen Konservatorium in Basel and with Renate Greiss and Aurèle Nicolet at the Karlsruhe Hochschule für Musik. As a soloist, he has played frequently in Germany and has been a guest of various international ensembles and orchestras. Since 2005 he has been a solo flutist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. With his own orchestra, he has performed works by Mozart, Ligeti and Nono. As a chamber musician, McCall enjoys worldwide fame: in 1995 he was a founding member of the ensemble est!est!!est!! and since 2000 he has been part of the Linos Ensemble.

‘A master’

Now McCall, who was called “a master” by Bernard Haitink, presents his debut for the groundbreaking TRPTK label, known for its state of the art recordings and adventurous productions. Bold arrangements of music by Johann Sebastian Bach are at the heart of his album: a starting point that sets the stage for unusual approaches to familiar pieces. McCall arranges the famous “Partita in A Minor, BWV 1013” and provides his own arrangement of the sonatas BWV 1033, BWV 1005 and BWV 1032. Surprising and tantalizing interludes heighten the tension.

Violating a sanctuary?

“I want to seduce the listener,” says the flutist. “Making arrangements of well-known pieces is something I have been doing for a long time. It can give a new and unexpected dimension to familiar music. Moreover, in Bach’s time, arranging music was perfectly normal. I can imagine that some will experience my interventions as violating a sanctuary, but on the other hand, it suddenly makes an old composer particularly topical.”

Never broken

“It would be nice if my album provoked some discussion,” McCall notes in conclusion. “I really tried to make arrangements in the spirit of Bach. We have to realize that we are not the same people as his audience in the Baroque period. With us, everything moves faster and we’re doing a lot more things at once. The authentic performance practice of today will also sound different from the great master’s time. You can never break Bach’s music and I can imagine that he is also happy with the way I handle his music. I fervently hope that listeners will enjoy my album!”
