Pro-Ject has released a brand new version of its Pre Box S2 Digital; the ‘Edition 2023’ where a lot has been changed internally.
On the outside of the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Edition 2023, nothing has changed at all. But under the hood, actually a complete overhaul took place. The mini-component is a DAC and preamplifier in one, equipped with three digital inputs. The ESS Sabre ESS9038 dual DAC forms the heart. According to the manufacturer, this is kept as “clean” as possible through USB filtering and separate internal power supplies for clock, DAC and preamp. The master clock has also been taken care of in matter of (re)design. Ultimately, the maximum achievable quality via USB is 32 bit / 768 kHz, and DSD up to DSD512. Via the S/PDIF inputs, you can achieve a maximum quality of 24 bit / 192 kHz. For enthusiasts, MQA capabilities are provided. Choosing from seven available digital filters, you can adjust the sound completely to your own taste.
New headphone amplifier circuit
And then there are the new analog output stages in both the preamplifier and headphone amplifier. The latter task is handled by the ESS SABRE9603Q. This should guarantee a higher Class A current rating, making the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Edition 2023 perfectly suited for low-impedance headphones and long cable lengths. Naturally, the new version is also compatible with the appropriate external battery power supply in the form of the Pro-Ject Accu Box S2. This comes in handy for purists who want to supply a truly completely ‘flat’ DC voltage to their system.
The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Edition 2023 boasts a rather nice price tag of €449 and is available immediately.
