Disney Australia is ending production of both Blu-ray discs and DVDs. If this phenomenon spreads, it heralds the end of these media.
For now, it is only Disney Australia that is stopping production of Blu-ray and DVD, let that be clear. However: this decision may eventually become a kind of fast spreading oil slick. Not only at Disney, but also at other producers. Anyway, DVD and Blu-ray have become a niche market. The vast majority of people watch movies through streaming providers. Even finding a high-quality Blu-ray player is increasingly difficult. In short: if manufacturers finally really don’t see any more life in those formats, both of the last physical media on which video is distributed will eventually lose out. In principle, that won’t be a matter of weeks or months, of course. But will you be able to buy new DVDs and Blu-rays in a few years? We’re not so sure.
As for Disney Australia, their last release on physical media will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
