‘Philips is working on micro LED televisions’

Philips is busy behind the scenes working on next-generation TV technology based on micro LEDs. And that technology has many advantages!

We are all familiar with OLED televisions by now. Each pixel emits light individually, which leads to high contrast values, among other things. However, OLED technology also has a major drawback: the organic LEDs used degrade during use. And then not even proportionally, the most used OLEDs age faster than the least used. And with that, a long forgotten phenomenon suddenly became (and is) topical again: screen burn-in. That burn-in ensures that, for example, a long-fixed element in an image – think of a channel logo, for example – eventually remains visible as a kind of shadowy image. Well, all sorts of tricks have been devised by now to prevent this misery as much as possible. And the lifespan of OLEDs has also been stretched considerably. Nevertheless, every self-respecting TV manufacturer is already working hard, quietly or otherwise, on the next generation of television screens based on micro LEDs.

The ideal screen?

The advantage of micro LEDs is that they are “ordinary” regular LEDs. Which combine their well-known brightness – and similar to OLED – with a long lifespan. Also, the phenomenon of ‘burn-in’ no longer plays a significant role here. Micro LED is therefore the holy grail of TV panels. Samsung is busy working on it and – we may conclude from this post on What Hi-Fi – so is Philips. But it will be some time before consumer-ready devices emerge from these experiments. No doubt the first generation will also be firmly priced. But once the technology is commonplace, we may finally have the ideal TV panel at our disposal!
