Samsung and the OLED lottery

Samsung and the OLED lottery

Beware when buying the upcoming Samsung S90D, as with this device you will never know which type of panel was used until after purchase…

There is a lot of discussion going on around the upcoming Samsung S90D TV. By now, the term “OLED lottery” is already established. We read this in, for example, an article from What Hi-Fi. Core of the problem is, that Samsung refuses to indicate whether a QD-OLED or a WOLED panel is used in this device. And mind you: we are talking about a TV with exactly the same type number. The Korean manufacturer uses a mix of these panels and uses just what is available (or want to get rid of?). Now that in itself would not be a drama, were it not for the fact that there are quite a few fundamental and visible differences between the two technologies. QD-LED is a significantly more advanced and more recent technology with much higher brightness and a more vibrant color reproduction.

Samsung itself – as evidenced by the article linked above – does not clarify anything. It also makes you wonder if there are more TVs where different panels than you would expect by the specs are used. Obviously, it would not have been an issue at all if simply a different type number (and price tag…) had been used.
