Disney Plus is the first video streamer to support both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. So you can go either way, in terms of spatial sound.
Good news for lovers of surround sound at movies and (or) concerts: Disney Plus will support DTS:X in addition to Dolby Atmos. The latter format will go live starting May 15. Subscribers to the streamer can recognize DTS:X soundtracks by the caption IMAX Enhanced Sound. Which is not entirely surprising, as previously – in 2021 – the streamer introduced the IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio, or 1.90:1.
Queen Rock Montreal
What’s further unusual is that the DTS:X format has until now been intended exclusively for use on Blu-ray discs. Possibly (probably) sound compression will be applied in the streaming variant, however, otherwise the required bandwidth will be prohibitive. The first concert film with DTS:X will be Queen Rock Montreal, which will be available for viewing and especially listening at Disney Plus immediately on May 15.
