Although the Google Chromecast has reached its end of life, it appears that the dongle is set to receive (at least?) one more major update to Android 14.
The old Google Chromecast with Google TV is being replaced by the upcoming Google TV Streamer. This news might have been a bit worrying for owners of the now considered “old” Chromecast with Google TV, wondering if their dongle would continue to be supported. According to Android Authority, there’s no need to lose sleep over this concern. In fact, they report that a significant upgrade to Android 14 is on the agenda. However, not all features of Android 14 will be supported, including the Thread network stack.
Despite this, it seems Google hasn’t forgotten about its old faithful just yet. Nevertheless, it might be prudent to start considering a transition to the Google TV Streamer, as eventually, the predecessor will indeed be phased out. But there’s no need to rush into replacing it just yet.
