Just as there is high-end sound for music, there is also high-end sound and picture quality for gaming. Philips OLED TVs could be a fitting option!
Gaming is huge. Whether at home or at group gatherings—physically during a party—a lot of gaming is happening. Gamers range across all ages, from young to “old,” and they all enjoy it. Some play casually, while others seriously invest in the best of the best. This has direct parallels with the traditional high-end audio world. A “gaming rig” can also be optimized, and you can easily spend tens of thousands of euros on it. In short: it’s serious business, and we’re starting to pay more attention to it, starting with display quality.
Philips states that their 2024 OLED TVs from their lineup are also ideal gaming TVs: “The 2024 Philips OLED TVs come equipped with enhanced technology and smart features, making them perfect partners for gamers. With excellent picture and sound quality, AI optimization, and handy new gaming functions, combined with the latest Philips Ambilight technology, they make gaming a unique experience.”
Gaming TV Specs
What makes a TV a gaming TV? For instance, a fast refresh rate paired with a good image processor. Lag is a cardinal sin—every millisecond counts. Philips OLED TVs offer the following features that can serve as a guide for a gaming TV:
- The 2024 Philips TV lineup includes three series of mid-range and premium OLED models, all featuring the latest high-brightness OLED panels with a fast 120Hz refresh rate (144Hz VRR).
- The models are equipped with the acclaimed P5 AI picture processing technology from Philips and the latest unique Ambilight technology.
- Technologies and new features have been developed at the Innovation Site in Ghent with the help of gamers, to fully understand the desires and experiences of gamers. This has resulted in a Game Mode, automatic detection of connected game consoles, and AI-optimized game settings for picture and sound quality and Ambilight performance.
- The new and improved Game Bar, with a smart menu, allows gamers to quickly adjust their gaming experience, display technical data, and save individual game preferences in one of 10 profiles.
- Five special gaming image enhancement features are available on the OLED+959, while three are available on the OLED+909 and OLED809 series.
- The three new OLED series feature low latency MEMC functionality, 144Hz VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and come with Dolby Vision Gaming mode. They support both NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium.
- OLED809 is the mid-range tv, available in screen sizes of 42/48/55/65/77 inches.
- The OLED+909 features the latest, powerful OLED MLA panel and has an integrated 3.1 sound system from Bowers & Wilkins, available in 55/65/77 inches.
- Then there is the most premium model, OLED+959, which has a 65-inch MLA panel, Philips’ powerful Dual Engine P5 AI processor, and an integrated Bowers & Wilkins 5.1.2 sound system. This model also features the new Ambilight Plus system for a two-dimensional halo of light, introduced in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Ambilight technology.
‘For Gamers – By Gamers’
“At the Philips TV Innovation Site in Ghent, a team of TV and image processing experts and gamers has come together in recent years to brainstorm, test, and develop. This ‘for gamers – by gamers’ approach has led to new insights into the ever-growing group of gamers and their high expectations. It has ensured that special game features and smart settings have been added to the current 2024 OLED models,” the manufacturer states.
Philips TVs thus offer, according to them, “an incredible and immersive gaming experience thanks to the combination of the latest high-brightness OLED panels, exceptional P5 AI processing, the unique Ambilight system, and excellent sound quality—with integrated Bowers & Wilkins sound systems on the OLED+ models.” And just like high-end audio, you can make “game gear” as expensive or affordable as you like. Below is a selection presented by Philips of TVs that are well suited for gaming, in the manufacturer’s own words.
OLED+959 Ambilight TV – For the Ultimate Gaming Experience
The Philips 65OLED+959 TV is the most premium model of the 2024 OLED Ambilight TV lineup. It offers an ultimate gaming experience thanks to the unique combination of excellent picture quality, leading TV sound, and the new Ambilight Plus system.
The OLED+959 is at the top with the new 8th generation version of the P5 AI Dual Engine processor combined with the latest META 2.0 OLED panel, which offers brightness up to 3000 nits. Viewing is further enhanced by the Ambilight Plus system, introduced in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Ambilight technology. Dome-shaped lenses have been added to the individual colored LEDs on the back.
Ambilight Plus can more accurately track on-screen movement and increases the number of zones to 192, providing a more dynamic halo with higher resolution. The system can project up to four different halos at varying depths, adding a new dimension to the effect. For gamers, a Game Mode Ambilight allows the LEDs to follow the colors and movements on the screen even faster. This helps enhance the tension and visual effects of games by expanding the action into the space around the TV.
Game Bar
The new version of the Game Bar, with a smart menu, allows gamers to quickly adjust and save picture, sound, and Ambilight settings without interrupting the game in one of ten game profiles. Its Game Bar also displays the most important technical data, such as refresh rate, latency, and other game-related information. The Game Bar includes five unique image enhancement options: Crosshair, Centre Zoom, Shadow Enhancer, Edge Enhancer, and Colour Filter.
- Crosshair: Place a target or cross on the screen for more accurate aiming, with adjustable size, thickness, and color.
- Centre Zoom: Zoom in on the central area of the screen for better visibility of details, with adjustable size and zoom strength.
- Colour Filter: The ability to limit the color spectrum on the screen for a stylized or focused gameplay experience.
- Shadow Enhancer: Enhances details in dark scenes by locally adjusting the black level.
- Edge Enhancer: Improves the edges of objects in the game to enhance clarity and detail.
In short, the Game Bar offers flexibility and optimization for gamers, allowing them to customize their gaming environment to their preferences. So they get the most out of their gaming experience.
The OLED+959 also offers the lowest latency of just 5 ms at 120 Hz input and 13 ms at 60 Hz. Low latency MEMC makes it possible to enjoy smooth motion with minimal latency—reduced from 200 ms to 31 ms.
Of course, the OLED+959 offers leading TV sound performance too, thanks to a new integrated 5.1.2 sound system from audio legends Bowers & Wilkins. It features 18 dedicated drivers and 12 amplification channels with a total output of 102W. The result is a massive, high-quality sound experience with a wide soundscape and deep, accurate bass.
OLED+909 Ambilight TV – The Superior Gaming Experience
The more accessible Philips OLED+909 also provides an exceptional gaming experience thanks to the combination of advanced 8th generation P5 AI processing and Ambient Intelligence V3 for optimized HDR performance. An MLA OLED panel achieves an impressive brightness of 3000 nits, providing brilliant images. The four-sided Next Gen Ambilight enhances the immersive experience by extending screen colors beyond the edge.
In terms of sound, the OLED+909 stands out with a 3.1 Bowers & Wilkins sound system, featuring nine front-facing speakers (left, center, right). Added to that a 75mm subwoofer and four passive radiators. With a total output of 81W across eight channels, the system delivers deep bass, a wide soundstage, and precise audio perfectly aligned with the screen. Clear dialogues and rich sound make it ideal for both gaming and movie experiences.
Gamers benefit from features such as the Game Bar, providing quick access to settings like Crosshair, Shadow Enhancer, and Colour Filter to enhance the visual gaming experience. Thanks to low-latency MEMC functionality, smooth images without stuttering are guaranteed, with a latency of just 5ms at 120Hz and 13ms at 60Hz, making the OLED+909 one of the fastest gaming TVs available.
OLED809 – Best Performance in Mid-Range OLED TVs
The Philips OLED809 sets a high standard for mid-range OLED gaming TVs. It features the 8th generation P5 AI processor and OLED_EX panels. It can reach 1300 nits of brightness for vibrant and sharp images. The three-sided Next Gen Ambilight provides an immersive viewing experience.
Gamers will appreciate the dedicated Game Mode and Game Bar, with low-latency MEMC and 144Hz VRR support (including Dolby Vision Gaming). Like the OLED+909, the Game Bar includes features such as Crosshair, Shadow Enhancer, and Colour Filter for customized gaming visuals. Latency is impressively low, with 5ms at 120Hz and 13ms at 60Hz.
Sound
In terms of sound, the OLED809 is equipped with a 70W 2.1 sound system (50W for the 42” model). Featuring two-way speakers on the left and right sides and a rear-facing bass driver. All that supported by four passive radiators for enhanced audio quality.
The minimalist design of the OLED809 includes an ultra-thin black metal bezel. Together with a central metal swivel stand for most sizes and metal pill feet for the 77-inch model, makes it a stylish addition.
