Imagine this: a firmware update turns your device into nothing more than a decorative brick. That’s exactly what happened to owners of the Samsung Q990D.

In English, there’s a fitting term for this: bricking. It refers to the nightmare scenario where a device becomes as useful as, well, a brick due to a software update gone wrong. This unfortunate situation has affected owners of Samsung’s flagship soundbar, the Q990D, making the issue even more painful.

The problem started with firmware version 1020.7, which then triggered automatic installation of subsequent updates. One of these follow-ups caused the soundbar to stop responding entirely—no resets, no workarounds, nothing.

For now, according to The Verge who informed the world about the problem, returning the Samsung Q990D for repair seems to be the only viable solution. Hopefully, a DIY fix will surface soon, because otherwise, this could become a costly headache for Samsung. Additionally, some other models appear to be affected, though to a lesser extent.

Golden tip: Don’t install firmware updates immediately after release, and always disable automatic updates on your devices. Let others deal with the early issues while you continue enjoying your equipment hassle-free. Go slow and avoid risks, especially with AV-equipment there is no need to install updates the moment they roll out. Waiting 14 days or so won’t harm.
