MP3 een van de meest audiofiele formaten beschikbaar? Is dat de mening van dit label of van Alpha Audio?
” Hoewel hoge-resolutie FLAC wel goed kan klinken, komt er niets in de buurt van de warmte, diepte en helderheid van Fraunhofer’s MP3-codec” .
Als dat waar is dan doet de rest van de muziekindustrie het helemaal verkeerd. Daaronder begrepen de streamingdiensten als Qobuz en TIDAL, DAC fabrikanten, MQA etc.

Vijf jaar geleden legde Mark Dunn ons hierover al het volgende uit:

” FLAC and other lossless formats will have more of the original data or captured sound than an MP3 or other lossy format, but the quality of the original data can vary dramatically and the dynamic range and particular aspects of sound suffer more than the overall quality when compression and lossy conversion are performed.

Some people prefer the flatter, more limited and jagged sound of lossy files. This can happen due to things like cultural or personal acclimation, listening to genres that don’t lose as much when being converted to lossy formats, or how most people are not very serious about their audio rigging and end up with terrible speakers and setups.

24bits is higher than CD quality, as the standard for CDs is 16bits, but you may or may not notice a difference. People have a meaningful amount of variety in their range of sensitivities to frequency ranges and volumes, and some people either do not care or do not notice a big difference between 16 and 24 bits, or between FLAC and 320kbps CBR (constant bitrate) MP3s.

It is advisable to have music in the highest fidelity you will ever potentially need it in—FLAC files can yield any other lossless or lossy format, including WAVs and MP3s, but you cannot return to greater or full fidelity when you start off with a lossy file. Backing up your lossless files on external hard drives, dvds, or other mediums can keep hard drive space open for MP3 collections, but data storage is so damn cheap and available these days it is oftentimes hard to justify not keeping full-quality music files around.

(Also note that converting 24bit to 16bit, even keeping the file itself lossless, means there will be resampling and thus a lowering of fidelity as compared to the original. Different ears prefer different ranges so whether this is an improvement or a devolution may be partly up to personal preference.)

Whether or not you will notice a difference between FLAC and MP3 depends on a lot of factors, but the better the sound system you listen through, the more you will appreciate having lossless files. For use in cars, over PAs, and in other loud or ambient settings, MP3s are usually quite noticeable as inferior quality versions, and can compromise your enjoyment (or employment). CDs, which you can extract to full-quality FLAC files, are already a reduced-quality version of the master files in most cases. Lowering that quality any more is not necessary or preferred for most purposes”.
