The Lotoo Mjölnir is a portable DAC and headphone amplifier plus streamer in one. The device was presented at this year’s High End and is now available.
What’s certainly striking about the new Lotoo Mjölnir – despite its Scandinavian name of Chinese origin – is its appearance. It most closely resembles a classic cassette recorder in a reporter version. Or, if need be, a car radio. But it is still really a device for “consumption” of music. In fact, we’re talking about three functions in one: streamer, DAC and headphone amplifier. The D/A conversion is handled by an AK4499EQ, where a maximum PCM quality of 32 bit / 768 kHz is possible. The chip also has no trouble with DSD up to DSD512.
Storage
As a music source, the Lotoo Mjölnir can handle, for example, a USB memory stick or a UHS-II SD memory card. Maximum size in that case is 2 Terabytes, which seems to us more than enough for a hefty hires music collection on the go. Furthermore, digital inputs are available: USB, AES/EBU and S/PDIF optical plus coax. As for outputs, you have a choice of a 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm headphone output plus two symmetrical headphone outputs (4-pin XLR and 4.4 mm Pentacon), a symmetrical and asymmetrical line output and three digital outputs. Two displays complete the package
The Lotoo Mjölnir costs €7999, noting that only 600 copies were made.
