Besides being a DAC, the new Musical Fidelity M8x also functions as a headphone amplifier and can even drive speakers. For some, this could be an all-in-one solution.

If you plan to use the Musical Fidelity M8x as a speaker amplifier, it is indeed possible. However, keep in mind that its maximum output power in 8 ohms is only 3.9 watts. While this is more than sufficient for a study or bedroom setup, it may fall short for filling a larger room with impactful sound. Primarily, the device is designed as a DAC and headphone amplifier, and in this role, its maximum output power of 3.2 watts at 32 ohms is quite generous.

At the core of the digital-to-analog conversion, the M8x features two ESS9038Q2M DAC chips, which feed a fully balanced output stage. The unit supports PCM via USB as well as native DSD playback up to DSD512.

In terms of inputs, the M8x offers one coaxial, three optical, an AES/EBU connection. There is also  an I2S input specifically designed for an upcoming CD player from the same series. On the output side, users can choose between XLR and RCA connections, with a switchable fixed or variable output level. Naturally, this device integrates seamlessly with the Musical Fidelity M8x Vinyl phono preamplifier, which was released late last year.

The Musical Fidelity M8x is available starting this month for a price of €3,999.
