Bowers & Wilkins 607
Of course, British Bowers & Wilkins cannot be left out of this test. We have the smallest bookhelf of the entry-level series on the tripods: the 607 S2 of 275 euros each. With tripods you will get about 750 euros. Pair it with a nice Sonos Amp or for example a Bluesound PowerNode 2 and you have a great set for a very reasonable amount.
The Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 is a very compact 2-way monitor. We see a nautilus-tube double dome tweeter (aluminium) and a continuum mid/low unit. According to Bowers & Wilkins, the ‘-3dB’ frequency range is 52 – 28,000 Hz. That’s impressive for the size: 16.5 x 30.0 x 23.1 cm. (bxhxd). The sensitivity is therefore 84 dB /w/m. However, the minimum impedance is only 4 Ohm, which is beneficial for smaller amplifiers. But yes: if you want to party a lot, power is desirable in view of the return.
Wow! This is a pretty bizarre little speaker! What a great presentation. And what an engaging sound. Yummy! Your editor hears colleague Yung say “you really want to keep listening”. And that’s true. We want to keep playing. And that’s a very good sign.
Although the speaker may not be completely neutral, the sound is very captivating. It sparkles, is easy to follow and has a lovely round lowlands. Powerful, deep enough. And that’s what draws you into the music. And what’s the point of listening to music? Right: emotion, fun… And this Bowers does! In short: are you looking for a (very) compact bookshelf for a tight price … make sure you check the 607.
Bowers & Wilkins measurements 607 S2
We can clearly see a tuning on the Bowers & Wilkins 607. The middle is a little quiet. It looks high, but that’s only on-axis. Off axis it’s right.
Distortion is very well under control from 100 Hz (below 1%). The little woofer underneath has a bit of a problem. Even though 3% of 20 – 55 Hz is still reasonable, if we are honest. From 55 Hz it dives down. As is to be expected; the specifications give that as well. The middle and high is incredibly clean and free of distortion. And that’s what we hear.
Lovely little speaker. Feels remarkably complete and delivers loads of fun if the amplifier can deliver enough power. In short: match him with a nice amp and go with that banana! Approved!
