From importer Hexagon, we get the AVID Pellar. AVID is a British brand that we did not immediately expect in this price range. The brand makes mostly more expensive gear. The Pellar sits – incl VAT – around 1100 Euro. Actually just above this class, but let’s just say that it might be worth saving a little more.
The AVID Pellar Phono is suitable for MM and MC. MC is adjustable by setting the gain on the bottom. Resistance is adjustable by loading plugs on the back. A very different system than we have seen up to now. Capacitance is 100 pF.
The playback of the AVID Pellar is incredibly loose and fast. After the pleasant and somewhat warm Gold Note, the AVID is like a breath of fresh air. Otis Redding really hits us hard with the Pellar. Both Martijn and your author just get emotional. A very special moment that shows how powerful music can be. This is what it is all about!
Measurements AVID Pellar
The Avid measures – like the other candidates – just fine. It is not the quietest pre-amp – the MOON is the quietest – but it is definately a very quiet one.
The power supply shows no noise in high frequency. Low frequency also shows an even picture with the rest. In short: all is well with the power supplies in this test. Including even the switching adapters.
Response is almost equal to the MOON and – if we think away the rumble filter – the Gold Note. Phase in the high range is slightly different with the three pre-amps. That may explain the difference in stereo image. (More forward, backward, air…).
