Intro

Over the past few years, we have had quite a few speakers from German company Elac Electroacoustic over for visit. The Elac Carina BS 234.4 – Elac has a thing for numbers – even served as a reference for a while until it finally had to go back to the dealer. Today we have another Elac loudspeaker in our listening room. The Elac Debut 3.0 B6.3 monitor loudspeaker. I wonder if it too deserves the status of Reference speaker. Let’s check it out!

Construction and appearance of the Elac Debut 3.0 B6.3 monitor

First impressions are very positive. Cosmetically, this latest Debut serie has come a long way. Sleeker, cleaner and more stylish than ever. The front in particular. Gone are the protruding screws that marred the front. To keep prices down, the Debut series is again only available in one version. Black ash with a matt black front. That matt front is beautifully executed and gives this speaker the pizzazz it needs.

The distinctive vertical waveguide contributes to this. This should ensure better dispersion of the music. The 25 mm aluminium tweeter goes up to 35000 kHz and is supposed to perform fast and open due to its rigidity and light weight. The 16 cm mid-driver is made of woven Aramid fibre and produces bass down to 46 Hz. An oversized magnet ensures that this 16cm mid-driver performs smoothly. The new fibre structure was chosen for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and, as far as we can tell, it does an excellent job.

Growth margin

The Elac Debut 3.0 B6.3 is a two-way bass-reflex speaker with a 6 Ohm impedance and a crossover at 2200 Hz. The average sensitivity of 87db makes this an easy to drive speaker. The height and width are pretty standard but the 30cm depth is less common. We are seeing this more and more. It’s a clever trick to develop a bit more cabinet volume. However, this makes this loudspeaker less easy to fit on a piece of furniture or shelf and when placed on stands, a bit more space should be provided.

The box itself is very solidly constructed and is reinforced in a number of key areas. The Elac Debut 3.0 B6.3 weighs about 8 kg each and feels solid. Quite a bit of thought has gone into the design. You notice that immediately. There are magnetic fronts provided and you get a five-year warranty on the components. No spectacular specs, no exotic materials and no 20 layers of piano lacquer. But, as we shall establish, you don’t need any of that to make a good sounding speaker.

  1. The monitor audio is tuned to clarity and detail. Impressive, but to my taste less engaging. Both speakers are neutral, but flavoured differently. Monitor Audio is brighter, Elac has a bit more warmth. For me I would get the Elac if given the choice between just the two. My general taste goes more to Dynaudio than Monitor Audio or Focal.

    • thank you for your reply Marc, and what other options would you consider to pair with Marantz Cinema 60, please? As for the bookshelf, my other candidates are Sonus Faber Lumina II and Dynaudio Evoke 10 … but these are higher than my budget 🙂

When I read this Elac review I wondered if I would not get 95% of the performance for half the price as you perfectly noted 🙂

      • hello Tomas,

You cannot go wrong with the Elac. There are so many speakers in this price range and it comes down to what you look for in a speaker. That is something only you can answer for yourself.

Every speaker brand has a kind of tuning. Just choose the one that appeals to you the most.

        Good luck
        Geoffrey
