The Sound

Contents

The first thing that stands out when we press the ‘play button’ in the ROON-app, is: air … space. How big this speaker plays! We are sincerely surprised about the scale. A lot of speakers do that considerably less impressive.

The second thing that stands out: it presents a very complete picture. We just hear enough bass when we set up the Guru with some air around it. Yes, we hear more warmth when we place the Guru Q10 more to the back, but also with some space around the Guru’s, we miss no bass to be honest.

Does it go less deep than our Focals? Yes. Less deep than the Bowers & Wilkins 805 D3? Yeah. but for such a compact speaker, the bass is more than fine. And even with a song like Lorde – Tennis Court – the bass is just prefectly audible and sometimes even palpable. Our listening room is over 50m2 (4.5 by 11), so it’s quite a bit to fill that for such a compact speaker.

Timing

Guru must have worked hard on the timing of this speaker. And phase accuracy, because voices stand like a house. And music enters the room very fluently and easily. No distractions. No nervous behavior. Even in more complex pieces everything remains very easy to follow. A property that we appreciate very quickly.

This accurate behaviour will partly be due to the widely used woofer. This woofer – said earlier, according to our estimation – crosses around 2800 Hz and plays up to 7 kHz. This means that the woofer actually picks up the entire vocal area, so there is no crossover in the vocal area. And that is important. By the way, know that a crossover can be 1st, 2nd, 3rd … order. The higher the order, the steeper the filter.

Guru doesn’t give any details about the filter, by the way. It’s an unusual design. But that’s all we know. But what exactly is unusual, we don’t know. All we know is the broad range of the woofer: up to 7 kHz. And the tweeter runs from 2 kHz and up. So it’s kind of broadband. The tweeter will be ‘protected’ so it won’t go too low. We often see this. It has advantages and disadvantages. A big advantage is phase. A disadvantage is that a unit can play outside its ‘comfort zone’, which increases the distortion.

Sound demo

Now we’re Alpha fans of “making it heard. In short: we have recorded the Guru, so you can experience for yourself what this speaker can do. We have also hosted the samples, so you can download the lossless versions.
