The NAIT Sound
Contents
We made a video a few weeks back showing the differences between the NAIT 1, XS2 and the NAIT 50. It is particularly interesting to listen to these three amplifiers one after the other because it shows particularly well that manufacturers are definately improving the hardware.
The step from the NAIT 1 to XS2 and NAIT 50 is not subtle. It is abundantly clear that Naim is making a step time and again in terms of resolution, control and insight. It does so without losing sight of Naim’s core values. Very impressive.
PRaT
Pace Rhythm and Timing is undoubtedly a Naim thingy. Anyone who plays with Naim – or knows the brand well – knows that the resulting ‘fun factor’ is built into the core of those devices. Whether it’s an amplifier, streamer or power supply … time and again they show that ‘drive’ that characterizes Naim.
The NAIT 50 also clearly shows that again, although we must say that this amplifier does have a more serious feel than the XS2 and NAIT 1. This is due to the increased resolution (and layering), openness and speed of the NAIT 50.
Your author has to say he likes it; the NAIT 50 is just a more neutral playing amplifier. The question is: how does this impresses people that like the older Naim devices? It is certainly no NAIT 1 when it comes to sound and character. And those who like that ‘warmer’ sound of Naim so much will not immediately fall for the new generation of Naims…. because the 200 series and 300 series also show this direction.
Modern Old Skool?
So those looking for an old skool amplifier in terms of appearance and sound should definitely not opt for the NAIT 50. This amplifier may look retro (which is very well done; hats off to Naim!), but the heart of the amp is definately modern.
The components are new and of high quality. And that expresses itself in a fast, open reproduction with a lot of enthusiasm. The older models also have that – that enthusiasm – but they are a bit more ‘forgiving’ and a bit rounder in sound overall. The NAIT 50 is more neutral and lifts a veil compared to the XS2 and NAIT 1.
