The Plixir Sound
Contents
We tested all the power supplies – the Plixir, Sbooster, Farad, Pura and standard power supply – side by side to get a good idea of where the various models stand. After all, we go from about 350 Euros to 3000 Euros, with the Plixir standing between the Pura Dodo and Farad Super10; about 1495 Euros.
That middle ground!
The Plixir Statement overwhelmingly has a different sound than the Pura Dodo and Farad Super10. Where the Pura Dodo brings air and speed and the Farad brings a very nice overall sound, the Plixir Statement focuses on…. focus.
Silly… sorry. But what is immediately noticeable – apart from a load of calmness and more control compared to the standard adapter – is that the midrange gets more space and emphasis. Also, the image goes more wide and the focus is really razor-sharp.
While the Farad presents larger, the image is also slightly less sharply drawn than with the Plixir. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But those looking for a razor-sharp picture are better off going for the Plixir.
Now in combination with the Volumio Primo, the sound does put more emphasis on the midrange. That has to fit within the sound balance of the system. In our set-up it is sometimes a bit too intrusive. However, it is also a matter of taste.
Timing
Rhythmically, the Plixir sits between the Dodo and Farad. The Dodo is really the fastest power supply of the three. The Farad has a very calm character (but is certainly not slow! That’s something else entirely!). The Plixir is in between. It all adds up nicely, but it doesn’t emphasize speed or rhythm in the music. You might call it balance.
Then when we start looking at calmness and blackness, we do have to confess that we don’t hear or notice an immediate difference from the other, not fully balanced, models in this lineup. Sure, the power supply is low-noise and brings calmness. But so does the Pura. So does the Farad. And they also have very low noise floors, we have seen in the measurements and heard during the listening sessions.
Don’t mean to sound nerdy, but i’m going to place my 2 plixir and 2 Sboosters on a shelve and was wondering about vibrations, should i place say a rubber mat under each unit or use mini spikes so that the vibrations if any dissipate through the wood?
Nope. Its fine!
