We miss the information about the album and the performers in the interface. Classic albums are known for their extensive documentation. If you have ever purchased an opera CD or LP, there is an extensive booklet with the libretto, background information about the piece, the performers, photos and illustrations. It would be very nice if this information would also be available in Primephonic. Our reference is Roon. We can click and look at background information while listening. And while we’re on the subject, is integration with Roon perhaps something to consider? Roon is already working with Tidal and Qobuz, Primephonic would belong in that row.

How it sounds

We listen to the Primephonic app via our Oppo R11s smartphone, which is equipped with a decent AKM DAC and Dirac DSP. On the computer, the sound goes via USB to a Mytek Brooklyn Bridge DAC/streamer/headphone amplifier. We listen with different headphones, such as a Hifiman Sundara, Oppo PM-3, a good old Sennheiser HD421. All headphones with an open and transparent character, very suitable for classical music. We listen to everything: symphonic work, chamber music, choral work, baroque, classical, contemporary. We have nothing to complain about the sound quality and that’s a compliment. We are simply dealing here with a streaming service that produces high quality music. No hiccups or sloppiness, no jammers. We can hear the acoustics of the rooms in which the music is recorded well.

Conclusion

We can be proud of Primephonic, a Dutch-American initiative to record classical music at the speed of streaming services. Classical music deserves to be listened to in good quality. And it is certainly no sinecure to set up a streaming service from scratch in a genre that works with completely different search criteria. Primephonic has also organized the earnings model for artists in such a way that it fits the longer track lengths in classical music. The pay per second model is new and hopefully it will be beneficial for music publishers and artists. All in all, we are very happy with Primephonic. User interface is excellent, soundwise it is also fine. If Primephonic would be integrated with Roon, a desktop application would no longer be needed. Hence four stars, as an encouragement to five!
