A decent music streamer for 249 Euros? Impossible… right? Well: not quite. Today you can, actually! Meet the WiiM Pro plus streamer. A true all-rounder.
In the world of hifi, things can hardly get crazy – and expensive – enough. But we should not forget that affordable, decent gear also exists on this planet. And we must also remember that a hobby is about fun and that not everyone can and wants to spend thousands of dollars on music equipment.
The WiiM Pro+
For those who think (as we Dutch say) ‘acting normal is already crazy enough’, there is the WiiM Pro+. There is even a ‘basic version’ for half that. We haven’t tested that one, so we can’t say much about it.
The WiiM Pro Plus is a surprisingly flexible little device. There is both a single ended input and output. There are also digital outputs and a trigger to turn other equipment on and off. We also see a microphone. That will be for Alexa. We didn’t test that.
Power is via USB-C. WiiM includes a phone adapter to power the device. Obviously there are gains to be made there.
The App
Installation of the compact WiiM Pro+ is done via the app. It is available on Android and iOS. We used the Android version; it works flawlessly. The app immediately finds the WiiM Pro Plus after which we can go through the installation. After the short and simple wizard, we can play music.
Remarkably, the WiiM Pro+ supports a lot of services. Much more than the average “audiophile” streamer. What we also like is that the streamer can be accessed via both Chromecast and Airplay. That again makes it possible to control this streamer via Roon. Who just wants to use UPnP: that too is possible … you read correctly: this streamer really does it all. Incredible!
We mainly operated the WiiM via UPnP and the WiiM app. Tidal and Qobuz work flawlessly in our case. UPnP also works quickly and reliably.

Meten is weten ?
I am really interested in knowing how far you can take this streamer/dac combo with a Dodo power supply, for example?
Is that power supply overkill or will this then become a killer streamer for £1000?
You will read it very soon.

Maybe a test with an external DAC?
Modern chipset ESS 9039*, AKM 4499* and R2R.
We did… stay tuned!
PCM filter: minimum phase and none
ESS 9039* minimum phase and without filter: FO
AKM 4499* minimum phase
R2R Non oversampling
We will do what we can… the test will be live in a couple of days.

“Frankly, the WiiM Pro plays well above expectations. The AKM 4493SEQ dac chip” and €249
