Apple has bought the classical streaming service Primphonic and with that it is striking a big blow. Soon Apple Music will have a huge database of classical music and extensive data at its disposal.
Apple saw, came and bought. At least that’s once again the case with classical music streamer Primephonic with a solid Dutch touch. For what amount the acquisition of the classical streamer has been settled is unknown at the time of writing. But chances are pretty good that the founders of Primephonic can rest on their laurels for the rest of their lives, always nice.
Nice gesture to Primephonic users
Primephonic is going offline on September 7. Existing users will be offered six months of free Apple Music, in which you will find much more than just classical music. Nowadays, in lossless quality if desired. Because Primephonic’s database contains a huge mountain of additional data for the classical tracks, it can be said that Apple has struck a major blow here. No one else has so much data and for lovers of classical music, Apple Music will be the music streamer from now on.
Als het u (ook) om de geluidskwaliteit gaat, dan is Qobuz een goed alternatief. Hi res ondersteuning en ook geïntegreerd in Blu-os dacht ik.
Verkijk je niet op het klassieke aanbod van Primephonic, want die is bij Qobuz ook dik in orde. Ik ben in begintijd geabonneerd geweest op Primephonic en ik vond dat veel componisten juist afwezig/ondervertegenwoordigd waren (vooral Angelsaksische hoek, bijv. Bantock, Bax, Dyson, Parry, Alwyn enzovoorts) die bij Qobuz/Spotify zo te vinden waren. Primephonic excelleerde in documentatie (booklets), maar ook Qobuz voorziet hier in veel gevallen in.
Ik was altijd heel geïnteresseerd in Primephonic. Een hi-res streaming platform met goede metadata klinkt perfect. Helaas is de lang beloofde integratie met BluOS nooit gekomen en dat is een harde eis in mijn huishouden. Dat zal met de overname door Apple niet beter worden vrees ik.
Goed alternatief is IDAGIO, een streaming platform met vergelijkbare metadata. Iets minder achtergrond informatie, maar betere curatie van playlists. Helaas nog geen hires ondersteuning, wel 16 bit FLAC.
Zijn er leden die Primephonic gebruikten? En zo ja, wat is het alternatief?
Helaas zijn er geen andere klassieke platformen, behalve het beperkte aanbod van Deutsche Grammophon Premium (met de opera’s vanuit Bayreuth).
Tidal en Qobuz hebben (even) grote catalogi, maar wat Primephonic en Idagio onderscheidt is de vindbaarheid van uitvoeringen. Het is dus tussen hoop en vrees, want gaat Apple inderdaad een goede klassieke app maken zoals ze in het persbericht aangeven?
