Synology has released a new DiskStation, the DS1522+ with 5 harddisk slots and based on an AMD Ryzen R1600 CPU.
The Synology DS1522+ is the latest compact solution in the Plus series. ‘This series consists of all-in-one devices that help large and small-scale users protect their data, IT infrastructure and physical property professionally and securely. In addition, the Plus series supports a wide range of business, productivity and IT management solutions,’ Synology reported. “The DS1522+ is a versatile solution, suitable for a wide variety of environments and users,” said Peggy Weng, product manager at Synology Inc. “With its new 10GbE upgrade option and scalability with 10 additional drives, the DS1522+ is a cost-effective solution that easily grows with any team.”
Compact solution, limitless possibilities
According to the manufacturer, the DS1522+ is ‘excellent for use as a primary storage solution for smaller installations. Or use it as an edge node for infrastructures spread across multiple sites. The NAS comes with DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1 as operating system. This offers robust data management features along with extensive collaboration, video surveillance and file sharing capabilities. The DS1522+ can be scaled up to 15 drive bays with two DX517 expansion units. If done so, it can reliably host massive amounts of data without taking up much space on a desk or in a closet. The new network upgrade slot allows for a 10GbE upgrade at any time. Two built-in M.2 2280 NVMe slots can be used to significantly accelerate storage performance’.
AMD Ryzen
Interesting to note is that AMD has chosen an AMD Ryzen R1600 as its CPU. Even more striking is that – finally – a more generous amount of RAM is built in by default: 8GB. That gives some breathing room (and possibilities) for running virtual machines, for example. If the 8 GB is still not enough, then expanding is also possible.
