Synology introduces DS223

Synology presents the new 2-slot DiskStation DS223, designed for essential data for home and small office use.

Equipped with the versatile operating system Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), the DS223 comes with a full suite of intuitive data management solutions that home users can use to get a grip on their growing data volumes.

“The amount of data we generate daily continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, so the need for effective file management is greater than ever,” says Michael Wang, Product Manager at Synology. “The DS223 is the ideal solution for home users who want to smartly manage their data with a centralized, comprehensive platform that goes far beyond storage.”

Private cloud to easily organize and share data

“With the DS223, users can aggregate files from different sources into their own private cloud, allowing them to easily access and manage their data from any device. With a gross storage capacity of up to 36 TB(1), users have plenty of space to store all their documents, media and other files in one secure location,” the manufacturer said.

Photo management and more

Synology Photos, designed specifically for multimedia files, makes it – Synology writes – ‘easier to organize files with automatic sorting capabilities. Secure sharing options allow users to easily share their digital memories with family and friends, while support for RAW files helps them in their professional creative work. The ability to integrate the DS223 with popular cloud storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive allows users to sync files to and from the cloud. So everything is in one place and users have full ownership of their data’.

Backups

The DS223 can serve as a destination for real-time or scheduled backups of file folders to effectively protect them from ransomware and accidental deletion. On mobile devices, users can set up Synology Photos to automatically upload folders and videos to their private cloud for continuous protection. Backups and other data on the server are protected thanks to the Btrfs file system, which uses various technologies to prevent data corruption and provide users with the ability to restore files to a previous version if an attack or unintended modification has occurred.

Built-in backup solutions on the DS223 itself provide additional protection. The entire system (including data, configurations and installed packages) or specific shared folders can be backed up to various destinations. Near-continuous protection is also available via snapshots that can be replicated elsewhere and quickly restored.

An intuitive surveillance system for a safer environment

Combined with Synology Surveillance Station, the DS223 becomes a full-fledged video management system that stores video footage locally for maximum privacy. With flexible ONVIF support and over 8,300 compatible IP cameras, the system is – the manufacturer promises ‘easy to install and suitable for any location. The solution supports multiple platforms thanks to powerful clients for Windows and Mac, and convenient mobile apps instantly alert when potentially dangerous situations arise, so users can quickly take action’.
