Sample Test – Yamaha A-S2200 VS Hypex Pre + Nilai 500

Some images don’t need any text. What they do need is music! Our goal is to make samples of as many products as possible. Purely because in our opinion it can be fun and useful to just listen to equipment. This time: the Hypex Nilai 500 with the Hypex pre-amp versus the Yamaha A-S2200. 1. Hello Jaap! As I am a neophyte just starting down this road I have to tell you immediately how valuable it is that you are taking the time to put out this kind of work. Your catalog is already quite deep and I am happily playing catchup and receiving an excellent education! I really enjoyed the three part series on bookshelf speakers. I often found myself at odds with the reviewers (Martijn in particular), but I know that’s part of the process. Every focused listening experience—guided by all of your experienced chatter—is helping me to identify my personal sound profiles while also educating me to the essential vocabulary and concepts needed to make good choices. I especially value this clever and seamless comparison between the 4.5k Yamaha and the amazing 1.5k Hyper Nilai. A bit of David vs Goliath! For what it’s worth, I listened with $400 Sennheisers run through my iPad and my aging and damaged old school ears could distinguish just the slightest differences. On only a couple of the switches could I blindly identify that it took place. Principally for me, the Yamaha was just a tad more robust across the full spectrum, especially the bass. And perhaps a bit (tiny bit) deeper and wider with the soundstage as a whole. But I’m talking a $200 difference, not 3 grand! The impact of this week of exploring your work has already allowed me to change my entry position of “speakers first” to “amp first”. The Nilai is such a sweet deal and I agree with you from the live stream: its a no brainer, so I plan to make it my first purchase and build from there with speakers next. Thanks to you and the efforts of a couple of other YT audiophile presenters (particularly Tarun, A British Audiophile) I am well on my way. I am happy to support your work as a Patreon member. For the cost of a couple double espressos, it’s also a no brainer. it’s worth every penny and I encourage others to join me in doing so. Your time, energy, and technical knowledge delivered clearly, creatively and in easy to follow packages should be rewarded. I apologize for the length here. I hope we will have a chance to chat sometime in the future. Now I have to go figure out why this devoted classical junkie’s judgments were almost always the opposite of Martijn’s. Haha.
