Codecs… dry stuff. Not very sexy. And complex. Because what is good? That question is difficult to answer, because as is often the case: it depends on the situation. If, like us, you started out with FLAC, then it is logical to continue encoding in that format. If you find WAV handy… no problem: it can work just fine. If you work mainly with Apple, then AIFF and ALAC make sense.

One way coding…

What we do want to say: if you start building a collection: just choose a lossless format. Storage space is cheap these days. And if you save all your music in a lossless format now, you will not regret it later. You can always go from FLAC or ALAC to MP3 or AAC. But the other way around is not possible.
