The Sound

As mentioned, we could relax after just one song. This is just a very fine speaker. So… that’s out. Now for some clarification.

Balance

The key word with these Monitor Audio is balance. Where the Silver and Gold tend a bit toward warm, this Platinum is very finely balanced. No woolly or (too) warm bass, but a tight punchy kick where needed and deep bass where it’s in the song.

Then the mids. One word: wow. The midrange is where this speaker really stands out. The Platinum shows a particularly insightful and open midrange. Really wonderful! This is clearly audible in more complex tracks such as Hania Rani on the album Home. There are sometimes particularly deep basses in there, but the piano has to keep playing open and fast. And her “fragile” and somewhat rarefied voice should not lose clarity either. This Platinum 200 just puts that down flawlessly. With a bucket of emotion in it as a bonus. Just try to keep it dry with Crazy Baby by Joan Osborne!

Great

Now some readers will disagree with this. But your author is going to say it anyway. Most ribbons (AMTs, band-tweeters) are not capable of creating a lot of space. Yes: there seems to be depth, but first of all the image is often narrower than with a dome AND a ribbon often plays forward. And not really in depth. Just listen… you will notice it.

Of course, there are exceptions. And this Monitor Audio Platinum is one of them. First of all, the picture is – thank God! – is not “in your face”. It plays remarkably calm and in depth. Another positive is the scale: there really is a bubble. That is remarkable for a speaker with an AMT. How exactly they did this, we do not know. But it is striking and very pleasant. It adds considerably to the experience.

Resolution

We are doing a little research into the influence of conductor materials in interlinks. For this we have purchased all kinds of conductors to measure and listen to them under equal conditions. We have already done some tests on the reference set as well as on these Monitor Audio’s.

The TAD’s we know well and we know what these speakers can do. However, we must also respect the transparency of these Platinums. We can flawlessly hear differences on these 200’s. That says a lot about the resolution of this speaker. And the exceptionally low distortion. Now let’s take a look at that.

  1. you did a disservice to these speakers you should have never wired them single wired there’s a reason why there’s four binding posts they sound much more open and three-dimensional when they’re by word you never ever single wire speakers that are designed to be by wired with a stereo pair and jumpers they will never be as open sounding try it you’ll see.
